This is one of Shakespeare’s more famous, short and funny comedies. It is a wonderful play for casts and audiences of any age. Young people handle Shakespeare very well. They are naturals when they are coached on theatre basics and given the proper background and motivation for their characters. In fact during Shakespeare's lifetime there was a company made up of entirely 8-12 year old boys that performed all of his works. In the early 1900’s there was an all female troupe on Broadway that performed Shakespeare’s works.
Leaving in the orginal language, the work has been cut down by 1/2 for a more managable time length. Two angels have been aded to offer valuable Elizabethan Trivia through wit and humor. All the old Enlish profanity has been eliminated. Children for the past three or four hundred years have learned to read on the two books found in most households, The Works of Shakespeare and The Holy Bible. It is only just recently that we have been learning to read on such basic material as "See Jane Run".
“The Comedy of Errors” has been performed by professional and amateur groups, adults and children and has pleased audiences of all ages. It is a timeless piece that will go on delighting audiences for many more centuries. And of course, the language and wisdom of Shakespeare will always speak straight to the heart.
This play involves the separation, then reunion, of Egeon and Emelia (husband and wife); their twin sons, Antipholus of Ephesus (A.E.) and Antipholus of Syracuse (A.S.); and their twin servants, Dromio of Ephesus (D.E.) and Dromio of Syracuse (D.S.). The family is separated at sea during a storm, 33 years before the present. Not one, but two sets of twins create mistaken identies and comedy. A funny, touching piece.
